Latest Call For Help We Received
Update August 9, 2009
Well Ms Piggy is settled in here. She’s not even the same pig! She’s eating treats from my hand, loving belly rubs and going on walk abouts. It’s amazing to see! Thanks to the help of Jose, Campbell and Sue we got her moved quite easily considering. Once she realized we were moving her out of there she climbed up the trailer into the crate.
She was described to me by the former owner as “not a pet pig” but I think someone didn’t tell her that! She’s loving life as a pet pig very quickly.
She’s been treated with ivermectin, she’s getting daily meds for her arthritis and she’s got a very large clean pen to walk about in to get healthy. It‘s 50 by 75 feet and she‘s covered every inch!. She’s got one wallow spot that’s clean and is a mineral oil/sulfur bath for her and a large pan with clean fresh drinking water. She’s enjoying her shed of clean fresh dry hay too. Her tail hasn’t stopped wagging since she got here!
It will take months to get her skin back healthy again. She’s got many infection spots besides the mange. I will continue to do updates on her and gets some new pics of her here.
She is in need of a sponsor.
I received an email today, July 29th, about a pot bellied pig at a residence from another pig rescue that had been contacted by a mortgage company that was foreclosing on the mobile home. This sweet pig is a mess. She is very slow to stand and doesn't walk more than a few steps. She's got a terrible case of pig mange. This only takes treatment with ivermectin to prevent and control. There was no food or water available to her either. Not even a sign of bowls when the people first arrived there. They found a small dog bowl in another area and gave her some water.
She appears to be blind or at least partially blind. Her front legs are splayed and she has difficulty standing and walking. Both of these seem to have been caused from being fed dog food to obesity and now a sudden weight loss. She appears both thin and fat at the same time. Meaning, she has bulk but it's apparent she has lost a large amount of over bulk she used to carry.
The pen she is in is over grown with grass and weeds over 3 feet tall. By the looks of the ground and weeds she doesn't seem to move from that small corner. There's a makeshift shelter in one far corner but it doesn't look as if she can even make it to that. The power is off to the property so there's no water source either.
There are 2 very sweet dogs and a cat on the property too. Both dogs are females. A shepard mix and a black lab. The cat is a black domestic shorthaired and very friendly.
Animal Control has placed a 3 day notice on the gate. I took photos and fed and watered the animals today. I always carry food and gallons of water in my truck just in case.
The pig is to big for me to remove from the property myself so I'm going to need volunteers to help me move her when the time comes. I'm not sure if she'll even fit in the large dog crate I have on my truck so we may have to use the horse trailer to transport her. Loading her is going to be quite a job to say the least.
I'm also having to build a quarantine pen and shelter for her while she is treated and regains her strength. I could use help with this both with funds and building it. She has mange so bad she's going to need to be in an entirely different area the rest of the pigs here are to prevent them getting infected.
This is a pig specific mange that does not effect people or other animals. It's a mite they get so regular monthly treatment is required to prevent this. When first treated they need a dose every 2 weeks for 6 weeks to completely rid them of the mites. After that they need treatment once a month to prevent them.
We had a terrible thunderstorm tonight and I can't get this dear sweet pig out of my mind. I'm so worried about her and hope this gets resolved very quickly for her sake.
I had already made arrangements to take her to the vet today but was unable to get any assistance in moving her.
These are the kind of calls I receive constantly and why donations are so important. So we can continue to help these dear sweet animals out of these situations.
